12. NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT

 (a)  Elected as the President, Population Sciences Section, of XXI Indian Social Science Congress, India,  1997-98.(Thanjavur Congress)

 (b)  As requested by the World Bank and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Central Govt of India, I was  coordinating,   as the senior most coordinator,  to supervise  survey,  data collection and analysis  of very large sample survey over whole of India in all 525 districts of the country and to survey about the level and quality of RCH (Reproductive health and Child health) services delivered by Primary Health Centers (PHCs), and received by sampled 525,000 married and eligible women in their reproductive ages, and by their children -- in order to evaluate and monitor progress in these services in India, and to recommend policy changes. I worked during the crucial formative period,  during  July 1997 till Sept  1998.

Of these, the first 6 months, July to Dec 1997,  I worked alone  in conceptualizing and designing the entire research design of conducting survey, organizing the project,  and related work . Later, from Dec 1997,  3 other coordinators joined the project. All the main design and survey design were done by me, and survey was initiated and executed by me over all 507 districts of India. Later I left the project in Sept 1998.

Other Research Activities

During ten-month stay in Tokyo and Kawasaki  in Japan (Dec 1998-Oct. 1999) I  discussed various crucial aspects of Tokyo Metropolitan planning and Metropolitan management in general with many Japanese experts and urban planners, such as, housing planning, traffic problems and management, underground Railway and subway development, slum shrinkage, urban development strategies, city planning schemes and strategies, decentralization policies and strategies for Tokyo World City and Asian Mega cities, etc. I discussed these aspects with Japanese Government's National Land Agency (NLA), Tokyo Metropolitan Government's City Planning Divisions, Tokyo University's Urban Planning Depts, Tokyo Metropolitan University's Planning Centers and Urban Studies Centers, and many other Organizations and Universities, including U.N. University at Tokyo, World Bank's and ILO's Regional Centres at Tokyo. These experiences are very useful for learning and suggesting better metropolitan management of Indian and Asian Mega cities.
